Civilience - who are we?
Civilience Limited was founded in 2008. We are a small company, specialising in disaster prepardness and response. Our experience was initially gained from operations with the UK Fire & Rescue Service and then developing the United Kingdom International Search & Rescue Team (UK-ISAR). We have direct experience of working in disaster and emergency situations such as earthquakes, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, building collapses, fires and floods. We also have experience of acting as mentors and evaluators for organisations seeking United Nations (UN) registration through classification by the International Search And Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).
We are qualified trainers and practitioners who can also provide consultancy and advisory services to organisations and individuals regarding all aspects of disaster management operations, logistics, equipment and facilities, training and management. We can also provide bespoke training and have access to practical training grounds across the globe.
To help us deliver the high quality training and services that we aspire to, Civilience has access to a unique group of associates who have real practical experience of working in disaster areas throughout the world and have worked with many disaster response organisations, including those based in Europe, USA, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
My background is as a Fire and Rescue Officer in the UK where I undertook Fire Service operations gaining experience of wide-scale flood incidents, plane and train crashes, major fires and other incidents. I was the Team Leader and National Coordinator for the UK International Search & Rescue Team (UK-ISAR) and deployed to a number of disasters and international exercises. Following the attacks of 9/11, I worked for the UK Government for 7 years in the development of a national resilience capability, managing the technical aspects of a Development Programme for a national urban search and rescue capability in the UK Fire and Rescue Service.
On leaving the FRS, I established Civilience Limited and rapidly gained a reputation for quality and technical capabilty in my work for a number of organisations. I have worked within both the UN system of disaster response and relief and the European Union civil protection mechanism (EUCP) as a trainer, mentor and evaluator. I am a regular contributor to the United Nation's International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) and have written a number of publications and guidelines for UN-OCHA.
I have also been able to gain considerable experience of the US system of disaster response, being one of the few non-US citizens invited to participate in the FEMA USAR Task Force Leaders Course. In 2009, I was invited by Texas A&M University to take up the role of International Project Coordinator for the Disaster Preparedness & Response Division, part of Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), a post I held for two years. I also worked with the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) in China, as a trainer and advisor, introducing the USAR First Responder Course into Beijing & Szechuan Province in 2010.
I am passionate about sharing the knowledge and experience that I have gained from preparing for and responding to numerous disasters and emergencies, either with other individuals, companies or other organisations so that they can better prepare for such events. Such information is hard won and my clients appreciate my breadth of experience and knowledge as Civilience continues to work with them to save lives and make communities better prepared.
